I liked the parts that stayed loyal to the source material, certain lengthy bits of dialogue and voice-over being lifted directly from the page. I don't know, I mean maybe I am a little disappointed? I wanted this to be a new instant favorite, and it's definitely not. And this is definitely that, that's for sure. I should want to see Charlie Kaufman doing Charlie Kaufman's version of I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I shouldn't want to see Charlie Kaufman doing Iain Reid’s version of I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I realized after a certain point that there was some sort of distinction that I had to make. I understood the references to the novel, and I wondered what first-time viewers who had never read the book or maybe didn't even know it was adapted from a book would make of it. Off the bat, I felt like I knew where it was going. So, in that way, this at some instances felt like a rewatch rather than a first time. I've read the original book about three or four times now. What do I think of it? It feels like my thoughts are very scattered and my brain is moving at a thousand miles per hour trying to put it all together. After uncertainty with its release, suddenly, here it is. Charlie Kaufman, one of my favorite filmmakers and writers, adapts what's likely my favorite horror book, and one of my favorite modern novels. That should tell you how much I was looking forward to this movie. My most anticipated movie for the past two years.
